Cisco Delago powers into stayers' final with Swan Hill win

Jul 28, 2014

Echuca will be the next stop for consistent galloper Cisco Delago after his strong win in the seventh heat of the Murray Mallee Winter Stayers’ Series (2108m) at Swan Hill.

Cisco Delago earned a ballot exemption for the $35,000 final at Echuca on August 18 with his one-length success in the $15,000 heat.

Trainers Michael Cornish and Donna Gaskin booked Dean Yendall to ride Cisco Delago and the jockey’s expertise played a significant part in the gelding’s win.

Yendall capitalised on an inside gate to have Cisco Delago travelling sweetly midfield on the rail while a reasonable pace ensued up front, which aided his chances.

Cisco Delago was still going easily on the home turn where Yendall decided to save ground on his mount by keeping him towards the inside section of the track.

The jockey’s choice paid off as Cisco Delago burst through a gap to hit the front at the 200 metres before the son of Delago Brom maintained his effort to the line to score comfortably.

Heading to Echuca for the final holds no fears for Cisco Delago, who has won twice at the track with both of the handy stayer’s successes coming over the 2100-metre trip.

Cisco Delago also notched a pair of second placings over the 2100m at Echuca at his last two runs before his latest victory.

Cisco Delago earned a $9000 winner’s cheque for his fifth win from 35 starts, which took his stakes tally to more than $67,000.

Congratulations to Cisco Delago’s terrific owners - John Bennett, Bob Bird, Jack Bridges, Norm Gaskin, Bill Mclean, Bryan Milne, Ross Morgan and Keith Pelham – on their honest performer’s latest win.
