Scintillating Cisco

Jul 11, 2017

Cisco Delago wound back time at Echuca yesterday when he produced an outstanding run to win the Quest Echuca BM 58 Handicap over 1600m on a soft 6 track.

He was slow away and Nikita Beriman riding patiently settled him in the perfect position, mid field on the rail, about four lengths from the leader. He maintained this position until the turn where Beriman asked him to improve. Weaving her magic Beriman came off the rail and when an opening occurred attempted to take the run,  bumped by another runner Beriman persisted and finally got him into the open. He was bumped again but fought his way to the front and showing a will to win, toughed it out to the finish, winning by half a length.

Spike (stable name) was originally retired due to a few poor performances towards the end of his last prep., as an eight y.o. rising nine, it was thought he had lost his zest for racing. A sale was agreed upon with the intention of him being re trained as an eventer, this sale fell through and he returned to the stable. At about this time the stable took on an apprentice, Mikaela, and it was thought that Spike would be an ideal type for her to ride in jump outs and trials. It was during this time that he showed his interest in racing had been rekindled. An informed decision by Mick and Donna saw him return to the track after 38 weeks and salute first up.

Congratulation to the Cornish Gaskin Team and to those owners who showed faith and stuck with him.

Spike's record now stands at 8 wins,10 seconds and 5 thirds from 66 starts, he has now won $136,120 in prize money.
